When Manufacturer Names Go Wrong

Posted by Tien Nguyen - March 12, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Say you’re a parent looking to save some money purchasing clothes for your newborn. Logically your first step is to jump onto a comparison shopping engine, such as Pricegrabber, type in “baby clothing”, and hit Search.

Hmm, on second thought…

Instead of clothes for your baby, or someone else’s baby for that matter, most of the results on the first page are clothing under the “Baby” brand, which as one can see is unlikely to fit your newborn for quite some time.

More Bargain Basement Bin Items

For all you frugal (not to confused with Froogle) shoppers out there: in case the $50,000 Betty Boop slippers weren’t enough of a bargain, perhaps a “kiddie” lamp that can potentially pay off the US national debt can pique your interest:

They manage to somehow be the first result for the broad, generic term of “lamp”, which onlookers may click-away on strictly for curiosity, costing them a good amount of money.

The good news though is that these guys only need to sell one of these to make up for unwanted clicks, and will probably be set for the next few months, or potentially years/lifetimes.

The $50,000 Betty Boop Bargain

Posted by Tien Nguyen - September 23, 2008 at 3:22 pm

We’re certainly not ones to judge others on how they spend their money, as we’ve all made our handful of questionable purchases at some point in time.

However once in a while we come across certain products that definitely catch our attention–in particular when searching through Shopping.com for “handbag“, as seen below.

While it’s debatable whether or not a $2,000 handbag can be defined as an outrageous purchase, I think most will agree that a pair of slippers, regardless if they were licensed and/or worn by Betty Boop herself, is not exactly a bargain at $50,000.

To those shoppers who thought they were in for a good deal though, imagine the reaction they had when they clicked through to the actual merchant’s site and saw that the slippers were just $5–effectively a  $49,995 discount.

These are the mistakes that too many merchants out there are making with their feeds, that is to say, showing up in irrelevant searches and listing incorrect prices.

Incidentally, an actual search for Betty Boop Slipper doesn’t yield this particular merchant at all.

Betty Boop herself would not approve.
